What actually changes a Glasgow move
The access, not the mileage
Across the city the distance is rarely the problem. Getting a household down a shared stair and into a van that is legally allowed to be there is the problem. These are the things we ask about before quoting.
Tenement closes and shared stairs
Much of Glasgow lives up a close. The stair is usually shared, often stone, and frequently has a half-landing turn that a three-seat sofa or a double wardrobe will not go round in one piece. Knowing the turn is there before the day is the difference between dismantling something calmly and dismantling it on a stair with the van on a meter.
Top-floor flats without a lift
A third-floor flat with no lift is a different job from a third-floor flat with one, and the gap is measured in hours rather than minutes. We price the carry, not just the distance — so the figure you are given already accounts for it.
Lifts that are too small to help
A lift only saves time if the furniture fits in it. Where a lift exists we ask about its size, and in blocks with a residents’ booking system we ask you to reserve it for the morning of the move.
Parking and loading
A driveway, a bay outside, or a street where the nearest legal stop is forty metres away are three different moves. In controlled-parking parts of the city a bay suspension has to be applied for in advance through the council, and that takes days rather than hours. It is worth raising at survey.
City-centre and one-way access
Some city-centre and West End streets are one-way, narrow, or restricted at certain hours. That affects which vehicle we bring and what time we start, both of which are decided before the day rather than discovered on it.
Getting out as well as in
Two ends, two sets of problems. A ground-floor house at the delivery end does not help if the collection is a top-floor flat with a suspended bay that expires at noon. The survey covers both.

What a Glasgow move is priced on
We do not publish a price list. Two three-bedroom homes on the same street can differ by hours once the stair and the parking are counted, and a headline figure that ignores that is a figure that changes on the day.
- How much there is to move — not the number of bedrooms, the actual volume.
- The floor at both ends, and whether there is a usable lift.
- How close the van can legally get, and for how long.
- Whether furniture needs dismantling and rebuilding.
- How much packing you want us to do.
- The date. The last Friday of the month is the busiest slot in the calendar.

We are not a Glasgow company
TransScot is based in Motherwell, in North Lanarkshire, and works into Glasgow from there. There is no Glasgow office and we are not going to invent one. What it means in practice is a short run into the city and a crew that knows both sides of it — the tenements and the suburbs.

The Low Emission Zone, and parking
Two Glasgow-specific things that catch people out, and both are cheaper to sort in advance than on the day.
Our vans can enter the zone
Glasgow’s Low Emission Zone covers the city centre inside the M8 and north of the Clyde, and it runs 24 hours a day. The grace period for residents ended in February 2026. A firm running non-compliant vans either cannot legally drive to your door or absorbs penalties that start at £60 and double with each repeat breach — and that cost reaches your quote one way or another. Ours are compliant, so if you are moving to or from Blythswood, Townhead, Garnethill or the Merchant City, it is simply not something you need to think about.
Parking takes longer to arrange than people expect
In a controlled parking zone — much of Hyndland, Dowanhill, Garnethill and the city centre — you may need a bay suspension, and Glasgow City Council asks for at least nine full working days’ notice. That is closer to a fortnight once a weekend lands in the middle. Miss it and the van parks further away, which is carry distance, which is time on the clock. We will tell you whether your street needs one when we survey.
Questions
Asked most often about Glasgow moves
Do you charge more for a top-floor tenement flat?
The price reflects the work, and carrying a household down three flights takes longer than wheeling it out of a ground-floor hall. It is not a surcharge added at the end — it is priced in from the survey, so the figure you are quoted is the figure you pay.
Can you get a parking space outside my flat?
In controlled-parking areas the council can suspend a bay, but it has to be applied for in advance and there is a fee. We will tell you at survey whether your street needs one and how long the application usually takes. Where a suspension is not possible we plan the carry distance into the time instead.
Will my sofa fit down the close?
Often the question is the turn at the half-landing rather than the width of the close. A video survey answers it in about two minutes — you walk the stair with your phone and we tell you whether it comes out whole or needs the legs off.
Are you based in Glasgow?
No. TransScot is based in Motherwell and covers Glasgow, Lanarkshire and Central Scotland from there. It is roughly a half-hour run into most of the city. We would rather tell you that than claim a Glasgow office we do not have.
How far in advance should I book?
Two to three weeks is comfortable for most moves. Month-end Fridays and the days either side of a school holiday go first, so if your date is fixed and it falls on one of those, earlier is better.
Do you move offices in the city centre?
Yes. Those are usually planned around access rather than volume — goods lifts, loading bays with time limits, and building management who need notice. We work evenings and weekends where that keeps a business trading.
